Merlin [DVD] [1998]

Great read

I wanted to show my kids this as I remember loving it when it was on TV many, many years ago! Arrived quickly and in great condition.

One of the few things my brother and I both love is this adaptation of the Arthurian legends. The focus is on Merlin rather than Arthur and it is a mystical, magical journey from start to finish. When you look at the cast you can see why this was such a good show for its time.This is a simple DVD version of the show and is great for a nostalgia trip or for anyone who loves fantasy shows. Definitely recommend.It came really quickly and in simple packaging.

This is a good film and certainly warrents the feedback from other reviewers, but it must have just scraped under the wire for Certificat PG.Sex & Nudity - the implied rape of Lady Igraine by Uther, the incest between Morgan Le Fey and Arthur, the adultery between Guinerere and Lancelot (with visual images).Violence & Gore - the battles conclude with large quantities of blood on the ground and the wounded being dragged off the field. Then there is the final battle between Arthur and Mordred focusing on Excaliber pushed through Mordreds chest (back and front shots).Yes, these are all part of the story, and yes it is my 'fault' that we sat down with my 8 and 10 year olds to view the film... but even fast forwarding parts it still left my husband and I feeling very uncomfortable. All these issues are probably better discussed with children rather than introducing them through the medium of a 'family' film.If you want to introduce your children to the story of Arthur and/or Merlin, tell them the story first or watch the ever chearful film Camelot!

I got this confused with Mists of Avalon, mixing up the characters (mainly Queen Mab). Although not a Sam Neill as Merlin fan, this film has aged very well - much much better than MOA, which has aged badly I think, and just feels completely miscast all over the place - whereas the casting here is perfect and really stands test of time. Get this and don't bother with MOA (not the book, I hear that's good).

For fans of 10th Kingdom, Snow Queen, and Labyrinth style fantasy films this is a must! TV movie regulars Miranda Richardson, Rutger Hauer, Isabella Rossellini, and Martian Short play superb charectors alongside Sam Neill, who stars a Merlin. Helena Bonham Carter is brilliant as the tragic and devilish Morgan.Jim Henson's Creature Shop helps bring the story to life with dragons, pixies, and griffins. Effects are high quaily and the landscape is stunning!The story itself is entertaining with new idea's and enterpritations of the classic story of Merlin, Avalon, and Camalot.This DVD presents the story in two parts and has extra fetures such as Making of Merlin, The Legend of Merlin, Production Notes, and Cast & Crew Biographies.For fans of Merlin I also recommend Mists of Avalon.

When I purchased this there was a message that said customers also bought..Merlins Revenge and Merlins Apprentice. That sounds good I thought….I did not realise though that there are Three sequel titles, Merlin 2, Merlins Revenge and Merlins Apprentice. GUESS WHAT/?? All three titles are the very same film. So why was it recommended that I also buy M/Revenge & M/Apprentice ????VERY ANNOYED !!!

Ce film a beau avoir plusieurs années je trouve qu'il n'a pas vieilli. L'histoire qui suit Merlin le présente sous un autre angle que les séries actuelles. Ce film est plein de magie, de romantisme et de trahison. On se prend vite au jeu et on se laisse embarquer dans l'histoire de Sam Neil et Helena Boham Carter (oui, que de bons acteurs). Un film de mon enfance que je suis ravie d'avoir retrouvé en DVD (et que j'ai également offert à ma soeur) :)

I have always liked the character of Merlin best of all the King Arthur legend and Sam Neill is a great actor.
